The Ultimate Shopify Store Design Guide | Part 4: Shopify Conversion Elements

In Part 4 of our Ultimate Shopify Store Design Guide we are going to look at Shopify conversion elements that turn visitors into buyers. This is because having a Shopify store that lots of people visit is great… but if they don’t actually buy anything, what’s the point?

Part 1: the right theme
Part 2: responsive design
Part 3: essential design elements
Part 4: conversion elements

You’re running a business and for it to work, you need to make sales. Which means that your Shopify ecommerce store in 2023 needs to be designed to convert visitors into buyers as often as possible.

But what does that actually mean, and how can you do it?

We’ll answer those questions in today’s article, which is the fourth and final installment in our 4-part series: The Ultimate Shopify Store Design Guide. You can read the first, second, and third installments here, here and here.

Why is conversion-focused Shopify website design so important?

Knowing your store’s metrics is essential for one main reason – when you measure something, you can improve it! So it’s important to track not just how many visitors your store gets every week and month, but also how many of those visitors convert into paying customers.

Using conversion rates to optimise your eCommerce store can significantly increase your revenue. With the average eCommerce store having a conversion rate of around 2-3%, it’s important to ensure you’re doing everything you can to convince your visitors to buy from you.

Let’s look at some conversion elements that are essential for getting sales.

eCommerce product customer reviews

As many as 93% of customers will search for reviews before buying a product. The reason is simple: we trust other people who are like us more than we trust businesses that are just trying to sell something!

This can be used to your advantage by including reviews and testimonials on your website. Try to get your Shopify customers to give you video reviews if possible. You can do this by incentivising your customers to create a video with 20% off their next purchase, or create a rewards / loyalty program.

Keep in mind you can also include product-specific reviews on their corresponding product’s landing page or description page, so that potential buyers can read through other people’s experience with that product.

Shopify easy checkout

When you make your customers fill out pages of information upon checkout, chances are they will get frustrated and abandon their shopping cart.

For you to make people buy from you, your checkout process must be simple, fast, and not require too much ‘hard work’ from your buyers. A one or two-page checkout is ideal – quick and easy.

Also, give them the option to checkout as a guest so they don’t have to create an account if they don’t want to. Nobody likes to be forced to sign up for more than they asked for.

Once their order is confirmed, make sure your thank you page details what will happen next and answer any questions they might have about delivery.

Cross-sells and upsells

It costs a lot of time, effort and money to attract visitors to your eCommerce online store. So when you have them and their wallet is open, that’s the perfect time to sell them more products! Increasing cart value is one of the easiest and most lucrative ways to boost your store’s revenue for little to no extra work.

Use offer bumps on your cart pages to suggest deals that your customers will love. Some examples of this include –

  • Spend an extra $30 for free shipping
  • Buy 2 get 1 free
  • Limited time discount
  • Complementary items (eg: cutlery for a dinnerware sale)
